Mavala - The Maratha Warrior: An Activity for the Entire Family
In the state of Maharashtra, Diwali is almost incomplete without children building miniature mud forts or killa, in their backyards. Symbolic of the great Maratha warrior Shivaji Maharaj’s forts, these killas celebrate his valour and mastery that won him many forts in battle. It is tradition, to decorate these forts with tiny clay figurines of men, women, and children, attired traditionally, befitting the bygone period. The warrior figurines among these are the mavale, or the ones from the Maval region of Maharashtra, who were considered the backbone of Shivaji’s infantry and were renowned for their guerrilla warfare.
